Every Wednesday we do a math bell ringer at the beginning of the class. We solve the problem on our own and then we go over what we did as a class. The math problems we do are the types of problems you would have to solve in a healthcare facility. It’s important that we learn how to do these problems so we have some background and have some knowledge when we need to do these problems.

We learned how to take vital signs like blood pressure. The first step you take to getting a blood pressure is to grab your supplies. You will need a stethoscope, arm cuff and alcohol wipes. Then you place the arm cuff on the patient, above the bronchial artery and the stethoscope under the cuff. You then pump up the cuff to the right number on the gauge, this number depends on the age of the patient. When it’s pumped up to the right number you slowly let out the air. The first thump you here is the top number called the systolic number. The last thump you here when the air is all let out is the bottom number or the diastolic number. A good blood pressure would be 120 over 80. An important thing to remember is to only take someone's blood pressure twice on one arm but to wait one minute before you start over. If you do it more than twice on one arm you could give someone a tourniquet.

We learned how to properly use a fire extinguisher

Pull the pin
Aim at the base
Squeeze the handle
Sweep from side to side
